Welcome to our team page for the Walk to End Epilepsy!
When your child is reaching their first birthday, your only concerns should be, when will my child crawl? What will my child’s first words be? Wondering, what type of baby food should I feed my child? Should I cook everything at home and only use organic, non-gmo products? When can I use regular detergent?
When my middle son, Jared, experienced his first epileptic seizure at 11 months, our entire lives flipped upside down. No longer was I worried about child proofing my home and what brand of diapers were the best to use.
I felt helpless as I watched and held my son.
Jared is now 8 years old, the middle child of 3. We’ve been told multiple times that there is no cure for epilepsy and the cause is unknown. The only known fix is a daily regimen of Keppra, a prescription drug. However, this medicine is only a mere band-aid to the symptoms associated with Epilepsy and not a curative. We live in constant alert in anticipation of when the next occurrence may happen. The side effects alone cause other added worries and stress factors. No happy child of 8 years old should be experiencing depression.
I still feel helpless as I watch and hold my son.
After researching more and digging deeper, I was able to find support groups that led to finding other families that are experiencing the same hardships. Unfortunate as it may be, we found comfort in knowing that we are not alone. We are able to confide in each other and slowly rebuild hope for one another. For this, we are grateful and want to reach out to those that are in pain and bring awareness that we are here with you, and you are not alone.
Together, we are not helpless. Together we can make a difference. Be a part of the cure and support Walk to End Epilepsy.
From the bottom of my heart THANK YOU!
